SelfDesigning...
Brent Cameron's Current Schedule
Hawaii
At The Neurobiological Learning Society Honolulu Hawaii - President Dr. Dan Janik
March 5. 2007 - SelfDesign - Principles of Enthusiasm-Based Learning - A Systems Theory Approach, a multimedia presentation with Mr. Brent Cameron M.A. (PhD) and Ms. Barbara Meyer M.A., authors of SelfDesign (Sentient, 2006). Human beings are distinct as a species through language and the ability to construct self-awareness through metaphors. This design of Self - or SelfDesign - is the foundation of our ability to learn and to transform ourselves and our
world through understanding and actions. Children learning their first language accomplish the most challenging learning task of a lifetime, yet do so through play and discovery and through a deep enthusiasm to engage and understand how the world works. This kind of natural learning driven by curiosity is the inspiration for SelfDesign. SelfDesign is a 24 year experiment whereby we work with children, youth, families and educators whereby learning is living in enthusiasm, self-transformation and harmony. A 2007 NLS Distinguished Lecturer Series Presentation.
The vast majority of people today live in a schooled society. Within this paradigm, we understand learning as a response to teaching, as a consequence of instruction. Regardless of the advantages of an informed and educated society, the interpersonal and political consequences of teaching and instruction have significant negative emotional and self-perception consequences. Instead of empowering our children, teaching imposes the will of an authority on another, and the learner's sense of personal volition diminishes. In SelfDesign we take the learner out of the passenger seat and encourage them to take the driver's seat of their own lives. Instead of learning obedience to authority, learners discover that they are the authors of their own lives. We are each an authority of one, and this is the heart of authentic learning. The focus of
education today on content, content delivery, and testing overlooks 99% of what is happening in the learning process. Learning is a neurological process of both an intra- and interpersonal nature, curriculum is experience. SelfDesign begins with an entirely new philosophical premise of who we are, focuses on learning as a integral aspect of how we work as individuals and in relationship, and embraces our highest qualities and aspirations as human beings. We would like to introduce you to some of our models and methodology unique to SelfDesign as a new way of thinking about human learning. Immerse yourself in over 20 years of experience with Wondertree (elementary), Virtual High (high school) and the newest post-secondary educational applications of transformative-style learning. A 2007 Distinguished Lecturer
Presentation.

SelfDesign: The Art and Science of Creating a Human Being by Being Human Brent Cameron The epistemology of being human, is the how of what it is that we do when we think, feel, understand, learn, believe and wonder. Our culture and our education system perpetuate shared hallucinations about human identity and what is worth knowing. This workshop will introduce some of the latest experiments and discoveries from systems theory, perennial philosophy, cognitive-neuroscience etc. as experiences to test some of our very first assumptions about who we are and how we work. Unless we go back and check the foundation upon which we design our entire lives we can not be sure that we are building an authentic system of understanding. The startling breakthroughs of this work of SelfDesign will introduce you to an entirely new way of
seeing yourself and your world, and offer a new basis for understanding what we are in common and how our differences make life fascinating.Drawn from the recently published book, SelfDesign: Nurturing Genius Through Natural Learning, Brent Cameron will present a multimedia presentation outlining the past 23 years of research and development into the work of SelfDesign. He will introduce several experiments that will allow participants to glimpse into a new paradigm of understanding and a chance to develop a new epistemology of experience.
Brent Cameron is the founder of Wondertree Foundation for Natural Learning in Vancouver, B.C., and co-creator of the SelfDesign Learning Community (SLDC), an online learning village for unschooled children and teens. Brent is currently working on a Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is the author of SelfDesign.Location: Bush Memorial Hall
SelfDesign Paragon: A Look At the Process of Learning From Eight Different Vantage Points Brent Cameron In the industrialization of schooling we have seen the transformation of learning into an appropriate response to instruction. Teaching and instruction of content and curriculum and the measurable results of instruction are what education has become in our schooling systems. Our greatest asset as human beings is our ability to learn, and yet in schooling our array of at least eight different modes of learning is reduced to just one. This model will look at the variety of learning that emerges in our living and outlines strategies for each one. The shift from content to process
brings learning from content to experience, from outside to inside. Learning is within the domain of human experience and only within the context of neurological events can our observations of human behavior begin to reveal the dimensions of learning.

Brent and Barbara will develop the issues of violation that exist in every school and how fascination and enthusiasm are essentials at the heart of real learning and human growth.
